WW2 AR Route

Through WW2 AR ROUTE ROTTERDAM, you can navigate the city's history during, before and just after World War II using AR (augmented reality) technology. The route is accompanied by a map. The idea for this tour was born out of the feeling that Rotterdam was missing a tactile World War II memorial, one where you can, through immersive storytelling, really compare, feel and see the city's history in an engaging way.

My role

Concept, UX for web & phone, AR layers.

Concept

The initiative stemmed from recognizing Rotterdam's lack of a comprehensive World War II memorial. This absence hampers visitors' grasp of the city's history, especially among tourists and foreigners. Our solution introduces an immersive 21st-century memorial route, in harmony with Rotterdam's innovation. Navigation is possible via printed maps or a website. Initially, QR-coded floor stickers were placed at key spots, enabling users to unveil pre-bombing Rotterdam photos. Ten chosen sites, either damaged or restored, spotlight the old-new juxtaposition, prompting architectural reflection. The app-free route prioritizes privacy and accessibility, requiring only a smartphone with AR Core and Wi-Fi. Employing augmented reality (AR), our route spans WWII, layering old photos for a historical archive, curated with the City Archive Rotterdam. Launched on May 14, 2022, coinciding with the bombing memorial day, our project encapsulates Rotterdam's past uniquely.
