gURL

is a speculative 2.5Dimensional teen bedroom installation, which explores the effects of digitalization, attempts of CTRL of external entities, self-expression and finding retreat in (digital) realms in the year 2032. Accompanied by an 80-page teen magazine, an audio track, face filters, 3D clothing and miscellaneous custom-made gURL items, trinkets and objects

My role

AR effects, experience design, execution of the installation

The problem

Project aims to address the challenges faced by Generation Alpha teens in the digital age, particularly concerning the effects of digitization, the influence of big tech corporations, and the impact on mental health. The installation, 'gURL', utilizes visual camouflage through feminine cliches to explore and conceal information about the experiences of young women in this context. Despite the seemingly innocent aesthetic, the installation delves into the complexities and dangers of modern adolescence, such as self-image struggles and depression. Through mixed reality, the project highlights the need for understanding the perspectives of both technology-immersed and technology-limited generations.‍

gURL is an graduation work by Studio Comrades (Nicol Colga & Edith Dingemans).

Exhibitions: ‘Dutch Design Week Manifestations 2022’ and the ‘Day of Practice-Based Research: Responsible Applied AI’.
Awards: XR Student Award for ‘Best Immersive and Extended’.
Nominations: Dutch Design Week ‘Young Talent Award (2022)’.
